PIGEON and DOVE RESCUE

Resources and advice for anyone who finds a sick or injured pigeon or dove, a pigeon trapped in netting or a baby pigeon or dove.

Rescue Centres

If you need to speak to someone urgently about a bird rescue, then please try the Three Owls Sanctuary's 24 hours helpline:   07973 819389.

Please be aware that many rescue centres and sanctuaries believe in automatic euthanasia for pigeons with neurological symptoms that suggest Pigeon Paramyxovirus and for unreleasable pigeons, particularly wood pigeons, in the belief that they never adapt to captivity.  Check their policies before handing the bird over.

Please never leave a bird or animal at a sanctuary without telling anyone there that you have done so.  Animals have died because they have been found too late outside a sanctuary's gate.

If you can, please leave a donation when you hand a bird over to a rescue centre.

Google Map:

The map below marks the rough location of every pigeon friendly rescue centres I have found so far  with a blue balloon.

Click on the balloon to find the exact location, contact details and other information that you might need.  You might have to enlarge the map over your area as some balloons get concealed by others when the map is small, alternatively you can follow the link beneath the map to view a larger map. Further down you will also find a list of rescue centres by country in the UK and by county in England.

On the subject of pigeons they say:  Over the years I have taken in injured pigeons and also those who do not make it back from races as their owners are not interested in failures and usually kill them if they are back late because the are exhausted. I have even had ones who have demanded to be let in with mine! Now in Lincolnshire they have a massive loft where they can fly in and out as they wish although they of course have food on tap so the best of all lives and they have even been inviting their wild friends in for a bite to eat and a sleep over!

WEST MIDLANDS

Wythall Animal Sanctuary

Somebody rescued a badly injured feral pigeon and contacted Wythall animal sanctuary  .  They advised him to put the pigeon under a bush and let nature take its course.  This appalling lack of compassion to any animal is unacceptable.  I posted about it on Wythall Animal Sanctuary's Facebook page but they deleted the post without explaining their actions.  Please do NOT take pigeons to Wythall Animal Sanctuary (personally I would not take any animal there now).

Yorkshire Swan and Wildife Rescue Hospital state that they never turn any wild animal away, and operate a policy of never putting a healthy animal to sleep. However, they believe all of their casualties must be returned back to their natural place in the wild, and must never be restricted to a cage or pen for the remainder of its life. It is only in circumstances where an animal cannot be returned to the wild that they believe that they have no other option but to put the animal to sleep.

Wildlife Haven
Thirsk
North Yorkshire
01845 526567

The main aim of the establishment is to rehabilitate wild animals and birds so that they can be returned to their natural environment.  Every casualty is treated as an individual and if they are unable to be returned to the wild they will look at the quality of life they will have if they remain in captivity.  Racing pigeons, ornamental pigeons and doves are normally re-homed and disabled hedgehogs go to walled gardens.
